Welcome to Detroit Socks

I am happy to report that Detroit Socks is now a registered 501(c)(3) charity so all cash donations are tax deductible.

WE ARE SORRY BUT DUE TO CONCERNS WITH COVID-19 WE HAVE HAD TO SUSPEND BOTTLE AND CAN DRIVES UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING, WE ARE ACCEPTING MONETARY DONATIONS UNDER THE HOW YOU CAN HELP TABE OF THIS SITE.

Hi, I’m Joey. Back in August 2018, I started a project called Detroit Socks. I got the idea when I found out that clothing banks do not receive regular donations of socks because socks wear out relatively quickly.

At the time I started this project I was not able to drive yet so I began collecting bottles and cans from friends and neighbors. I use the cash received from the returnables to purchase socks. Once I collect enough socks, I travel to various soup kitchens, homeless shelters, clothing banks and churches to distribute the new socks.

It is great to see how a new pair of socks can brighten someone’s day.

I have expanded my bottle and can collection area with the help of my parents to include Plymouth-Canton and surrounding areas. On a monthly basis, I schedule pick-up days. I collect addresses of those willing to help and pick-up their returnables on these days. It has been great to see how members of my community have helped me. I am very thankful.
